When Does Extracting a Tooth Make Sense? Why Would I Consider Pulling a Tooth?

When Does Extracting A Tooth or Pulling a Tooth Make Sense?  Why would I Consider Extracting a tooth?

The most common explanation for why a patient elects to have a tooth extracted is the need to be relieved of severe pain, immediately, and with relatively minimal costs when compared to alternative forms of dental treatment.

Usually, alternative methods of treatment for providing pain relief to the patient and restoration of the tooth are available.  Often these options may require multiple treatment appointments, time off work and perhaps significantly higher treatment costs. All are factors too be considered and often are the primary reasons the patient elects to have a tooth extracted even though it may be treatable.

Severe dental pain can be described by patients in a variety of ways -- pain on biting, pain to hot or cold, waking pain during night time sleeping and lingering pain after the onset of a hot or cold stimulus, throbbing pain or pulsing pain shortly after eating; all are descriptions of your dental pain which will assist your dentist in diagnosing the origin and nature of your dental pain.  Jaw pain may even be referred from other areas of your body and can indicate a more serious systemic health condition.  The nature of your dental pain provides valuable information leading to the diagnosis and treatment options you have available to you.

It is also helpful for you to document when you are experiencing tooth pain and its location.  This type of information will help in providing the best description of the symptoms you are having and over what time frame days, week or months and will expedite you examination appointment and discussion regarding the best course of treatment.

In conclusion, “Severe Dental Pain” has different meanings to each of us and all descriptions are valid.  However, your description of  the symptoms you are having may aid in an efficient diagnosis, and certainly will provide you and your dentist with the best information for making and informed decision as to the best treatment option for handling your dental emergency before concluding that you tooth should be extracted.

Today tooth extraction makes sense when finances are a major consideration and the various treatment alternatives are simply cost prohibitive.  Many times the tooth prognosis is  poor  and cannot easily be repaired due to extensive decay, extensive loss of bone around the tooth from periodontal disease and excessive mobility.

Finally and perhaps the most significant reasons for tooth extractions is when the oral diagnosis for  tooth is considered to be detrimental to the patients Oral/Systemic Health.  These conditions would include a dental abscess, infected wisdom teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, infected tooth roots, teeth associated with cysts, tumors or other systemic health conditions which would warrant its removal to avoid further health complications.  Dental Infections  are serious and can be life threatening.

Patients should be seen as early as possible to avoid more serious complications arising from these types of situations, and early intervention will provide professional management and most likely lead to early pain relief and more favorable treatment result.  Ignoring your bodies symptoms most often leads to unfavorable dental and systemic health consequences.

After a professional dental evaluation, oral diagnosis and consulting with you dentist, it may be  that extraction of the tooth is a viable alternative the best alternative for you to avoid undesirable consequences.

The status of Your Oral Health,
Oral Plaque Levels, Gingival Gum Inflammation & Periodontal Disease: Provides Many of the Initial Warning Signals to Other Systemic Diseases and More Serious Health Conditions.
The status of your oral health provides many of the initial warning signals to other systemic diseases and more serious health conditions.

Dental plaque levels, calculus build up and tartar contribute to gum inflammation and periodontal disease. These oral and peridodontal conditions contribute to more serious systemic health risks including heart disease, strokes, uncontrolled diabetes and hormonal imbalances are but a few of the systemic conditions that can be identified through a comprehensive dental and periodontal examination.

The oral bacteria present in our mouths and associated with chronic gum disease and chronic gum inflammation (gingivitis)  have also been found to be directly associated with many systemic  health conditions.  Patients should recognize the importance of regular dental evaluations and cleanings as an early and periodic health screening which often can lead to early diagnosis and earlier treatment of undiagnosed systemic conditions.

"The status of the health of your mouth  holds many of your body secrets;  clues to your overall systemic health."  Recent studies indicate that the status of your oral health provide many initial warning signals to other systemic diseases and more serious health conditions.  Systemic health risks  include heart disease, strokes, uncontrolled diabetes and hormonal imbalances are to name a few.  Often these conditions can be identified early through a comprehensive dental evaluation and  assessing any possible symptoms you may be experiencing.

Patients having already been diagnosed with systemic health conditions, should be aware of the importance in reducing their health risks, through proper dental care, regular dental cleanings, and obtaining require dental treatment on a timely basis. Most importantly all patients should have a better appreciation of the value of their periodic dental examination to screen for possible “red flags to your overall health” or changes that may be occurring in your health status.

Today it is essential that medical and dental professional, recognize the importance of working closely together for all professionals to monitor their patients in a multidisciplinary health approach for the benefit of all, especially their patients.   A large number of systemic diseases, perhaps as great as 90% or more, as suggested by current research, have associated oral symptoms.

It is has been identified by many cardiologist, that the association of  periodontal gum disease and the chronic inflammation(gingivitis) associated with gum disease are “risk factors” for cardiovascular disease.  Regular dental evaluations and cleanings are prudent and perhaps the easiest way to bring about early diagnosis and treatment of both the periodontal condition and possible cardiovascular disease.

Oral bacteria present in the mouth are provided easy access to our bodies through our gums. Patients with chronic gum disease place these patients at a substantially higher risk for heart attack. Gingivitis an earlier form of gum disease and periodontitis a latter form of gum disease having multiple stages; is a direct result of the formations of  active bacteria, build up of bacterial plaque and calculus on your teeth.

Bacterial colonies from infected gums are able to dislodge from your gums and teeth, enter the bloodstream, attach to internal blood vessel walls and lead to further clot formation once established with in the affected blood vessels.  Clot formation on the internal vessel walls result in decreased blood flow to your heart and other organs where the affected vessel are located.  In the heart, these resulting clots increase blood pressure and the patients risk of a heart attack.

When considering these recent cardiovascular studies We recommend that patients view dental gum disease as a serious systemic health condition, seek early diagnosis and treatment.  Gum disease requires early preventions and intervention, systemic health considerations must always be considered and will require the collaborative assistance of the patients, medical and dental professionals.

If  you have already been diagnosed with heart disease, It is recommended that you  establish regular dental evaluations and maintenance therapy and establish excellent personnel oral hygiene regimen. Intervals on 3 to 4 months is recommended and twice annually at the minimum.    Patients are asked to provide regular medical updates of all medications being taken and medical treatments they are receiving since their last dental evaluation and at each visit.

It is recommended that you follow directions  carefully by your physician, cardiologist and your dental health provider to avoid undesirable consequences. Take all prescribed medications as directed. Ask for assistance when ever you are unsure as to the appropriate course of action.     We are always happy to assist you in help making good dental health decisions should you be unsure or the directions given.

If you have other questions regarding the information provided in this article please call us and we would be happy to assist you. Should you wish to make an appointment to discuss your specific health & dental concerns, we would enjoy helping you arrange an appointment to discuss your specific concerns with you.

Invisalign Orthodontic clear aligners - "Smile enhancement with predictable results" by Joseph C Ardizzone DDS

Many of our patients have ask about the Invisalign Orthodontic System. Often times this is referred to as clear braces. The system is highly effective, very efficient at realigning teeth and improving smiles in a number of different alignment and crowding applications.

Probably one of the greatest, most beneficial applications today, is for the patient that has already had braces in the past and is now noticing some minor or even moderate crowding or alignment issues (often referred by the dental professional as relapse). Working adults find this method of realignment and cosmetic correction to be fast, efficient and a very comfortable way of reestablishing that beautiful, natural smile they enjoyed and accomplished during their earlier years of orthodontic treatment.

The Invisalign program, is an excellent system for orthodontic cosmetic treatment. Invisalign requires very few appointments for patients to get started. Most cases, can be completed in 6 to 9 months with a very few office visits. This Invisalign system clear aligners are becoming very popular with young adults that do not wish to wear metal braces. More and more young people are finding this program an appealing alternative with faster treatment times.

The invisalign system offers a popular computer simulation program for our patients smile assessment before and after treatment. This is accomplished through a unique Cat Scan Technology of the patients dental molds prior to treatment. The computer program allows patients to view their actual teeth after being uploaded onto the companies proprietary software. This effectively allows the patients dentition to be analyzed in many different 3 dimensional views. Smiles can be evaluated, dental concerns can be visually expressed and addressed, and the final orthodontic results may be assessed prior to using the Invisalign clear aligners as the treatment of choice, to enhance the patients smile.

If you wish more information about this Invisalign Orthodontic treatment, please let us know and we will gladly send you more information or call the office an we would be glad set up an evaluation appointment for you or anyone in the family.
